Here are some interesting facts about this city. Port Hueneme (pronounced “Wy-nee’mee”) is a seaside community in Ventura County, California.

This city is located 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 40 miles south of Santa Barbara. The City’s name derives from a Chumash word (Wene’mu) meaning “resting place.”

It is located halfway between two larger Chumash settlements, Malibu and Ventura. The first post office in the community was in Wynema. When Thomas R. Bard laid out the town in 1872, he called it Hueneme. The name was changed to Port Hueneme after the Port of Hueneme was built in 1939.

The city is home to the Port of Hueneme, the only deep water port between Los Angeles and San Francisco. When the Port opened in 1940, it was closed almost immediately by a labor dispute. In 1942, it was taken over as a Navy Base and after the war, a portion of the port was leased back to the farmers that had helped construct it.

The Naval Base is located here and is home base to the United States Navy Seabees. The second oldest of the official Navy museums, the Seabee Museum was established in 1947 in Port Hueneme, California, which today is part of Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC). During the summer, the Naval Base Ventura County opens a portion of its gates to the public for Seabee Days, a fun 2 day celebration and festival honoring the men & women of the Navy’s elite construction force.

Military parades, skill set demonstrations of what missions Seabees carry out throughout the world are just a few of the events visitors will see. For the kids, there is a carnival.

The Hueneme Beach Park is truly the pride of Port Hueneme.

This 50 acre parks provides:

  • Numerous picnic tables and barbecue pits
  • Walking paths between the flag plazas, gazebo, and lighthouse
  • The stately Alaska Air Flight 261 memorial sundial
  • A 24-hour fishing pier
  • Sand volleyball courts
  • Surfside Seafood snack bar
  • Lifeguard protection
  • and a Junior Lifeguard Program in the summer.
